Born in Melbourne Australia to immigrant parents, Allison Braaf often felt an outcast growing up. Her deeply rooted South African culture became an important role in discovering who she was as an artist, but also who she was as an individual. She explains ā€œWhen you have a first generation birthplace, you have no history with that country, there is no lineage, no connection, so Iā€™ve always felt a deeper attachment to my South African side.  Itā€™s my culture and my inspiration.ā€ It wasnā€™t until 2018 that she started taking painting seriously. ā€œGoing through a depression, I needed to look forward to something. So I enrolled myself in a paint night for adults, where I met my teacher and mentor. There was an instant connection. She motivated me, I fell in love with her work, her ideas, her style. Thatā€™s where I started my own journey as an artist.ā€ Allison now uses her own art to tell a story. It has a soul, a depth, a motion, all of which are represented by her personal connection with her family roots and her emotions.

Getting to where Allison is today took a lot of personal reflection. ā€œI had to dig deeper, meditate, soul search, find what I wanted to share that wasnā€™t transferable through conversation or words but through canvas. Once I found that, it opened up doors, it expanded me as a more complex person. You want your art to touch people, to captivate them, to relate to them, but you also want to create a beautiful piece that can be interpreted a million different ways.ā€ Setting herself apart from other painters, Allison is focusing on creating pieces that are unpredictable and invoke deeper thinking. She describes much of her work as her lifeā€™s journey.

Camissa Series

Being mixed race, creole, so-called coloured South African we can struggle with our identity as Africans. The Camissa river is where it all started qpproximately 420 yrs ago. It was a trading post and settlement for the coming together of Indigenous, Asian and African Slaves, Free Blacks and Europeans. Today the river still flows underground through Cape Town in to the sea and the spirit still remains very much alive. If my style speaks to you, Iā€™d love to work with you in the future.
